Retired industrial machine shop owner Gerald (Jerry) Mann died Sunday, October 3 from complications associated with Parkinson’s disease. He died at his home in Morgan Hill with his 27-year-old wife Wendy by his bedside.
Born September 13, 1937 to Barbara Jean and Frank Mann, in San Francisco, Jerry grew up in the Bay Area, living as far away as Auburn, and eventually settled in the San Jose area as a young adult. . He graduated from Willow Glen High School in San Jose in 1955. In 1964 Jerry and a partner purchased BBC, Inc, a specialty industrial machine shop, which he co-owned and operated for 50 years, until ‘on the sale of the business in 2019. His curiosity for how things work and his love of construction permeated every part of his life, including the design and construction of the house he and Wendy resided in. until 2014. Jerry also built and restored several vintage hot rods and planted and harvested vineyards in his last two residences, ultimately producing a pinot noir which he named Jerry’s Jam.
His gardening interests were not limited to viticulture, however. He and his dear friend, Ramon Berrara, spent almost every weekend not only in the vineyards, but also tending to fruit trees and his growing ornamental garden of trees, to shrubs and flowers.
An active outdoor enthusiast, Jerry hunted deer, elk, turkey and duck, both in California and on annual hikes in Colorado, always accompanied by close friends and family. He was also a fishing enthusiast who, although he had no taste for fish, therefore never ate anything he caught, delighted his friends, family and neighbors with his catch.
His fleet of cars, trucks, hot rods, ATVs and boats has been enriched for many years with another of his passions: motorcycles. Jerry spent many years mountain biking in Baja, California with a group of motorcycle enthusiasts (many stories could be told…)
He is survived by his wife, Wendy Mann; her brother, Robert Mann (Thanh), of Sacramento, California; his sons, Bryon Mann and Steven (Debra) Mann, both of San Jose, California; and her stepchildren, Shae Fogg, of Morgan Hill, CA, Robert Fogg, of Gardnerville, NV and Jeffrey Fogg, of Grass Valley, CA; and five grandchildren, Kiandra Kanavel (Charlie), Mikaela Kirkman, Lorraine Mann, Emma Mann and Daniel Fogg.
