Mumbai, 21 February 2022: Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. (Jio), India’s largest provider of 4G digital and mobile broadband services, will land the next-generation India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) multi-terabit submarine cable system in Hulhumale, Maldives.

The high-capacity, high-speed IAX system will directly connect Hulhumale to major global internet hubs in India and Singapore.

The Minister of Economic Development, the Hon. Ouz Fayyaz Ismailspeaking on the launch of the Maldives’ first international cable, said: “This is the first step towards improving our connectivity infrastructure and opening up vast opportunities for our people by providing secure services , affordable and high quality. We also aim to diversify our economy and establish ourselves as a key communication center in South Asia. Besides economic development, it will accelerate social development through high-speed Internet access in the whole of the Maldives, which will allow us to achieve the equitable development that we seek.

“Today’s global economy is driven by low-latency broadband, connecting people, businesses, content and services. IAX will not only connect the Maldives to global content hubs, but it will also support the explosive growth in data demand expected from new initiatives launched by the Government of the Maldives,” said Mathew Oommen, President, Reliance Jio. “Jio is very pleased to work with the Government of the Maldives to help achieve this ambition by providing high-quality terabit capacity supporting Web 3.0-enabled Internet services.”

The IAX system originates from Mumbai in the west and connects directly to Singapore, with branches including additional landings in India, Malaysia and Thailand. The India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) system connects Mumbai to Milan, lands in Savona, Italy, and includes additional landings in the Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean. IAX is expected to be ready to go live in late 2023, while IEX will be ready to go live in mid-2024.

These high-capacity, high-throughput systems will deliver over 200 Tbps of capacity at speeds of 100 Gbps, over 10,000 miles. Using open system technology and the latest wavelength-switched RoADM/branching units ensures rapid upgrade deployment and the ultimate flexibility to add/remove waves across multiple sites.
